Transform your property into a sustainable, food producing and eco-friendly habitat. Our workshops feature some of the best and brightest eco-minded enthusiasts in the DFW area. By the end of an Urban Sustainable Ecosystem workshop, students should be able to apply what they have learned on their own homestead. Our students’ successful application of these principles will enable a healthy individual, family, community and planet.

9:00 - 9:15 a.m.: Introduction to the Urban Sustainable Ecosystem - John Krause: host of DFW’s #1 Organic Radio Program, Living Natural First on 820AM, Instructor
John will detail why you should consider a change and develop an Urban Sustainable Ecosystem on your homestead.
9:15 - 10:15 a.m.: Composting - Pat Martin: Director of Compost Operations, Recycle Revolution
The foundation of a beautiful, safe and affordable urban yard lies in the soil. Learn how to create and maintain your soil and the proper composting techniques to provide free benefits to your yard, landscape and gardens.
10:20 - 11:50 am: Start Your Fall Raised Bed Vegetable Garden - Heather Rinaldi: Founder of Texas Worm Ranch and Professional Organic Vegetable Garden Installer, Instructor
Follow Heather’s techniques to eat out of your garden nearly every day of the year. Learn to grow organic, affordable and successful food right in your backyard. Planting techniques and ongoing care will be applied as the class plants their own backyard garden during the class.

12:40 - 1:45 p.m. Rain Gardens - Carrie Dubberley: Founder and company President, Dubberley Landscapes
Water is quickly becoming a scarce resource in our region. Drought conditions are becoming the norm in Dallas/Ft. Worth. Learn conservation techniques and how to install and use rainwater harvesting and water wise systems.
2:00 p.m. - 3:20 pm: Native and Drought Tolerant Landscapes - Roger Sanderson: Noted native Texas plant expert and Director of Horticulture - Texas Discovery Gardens. Also formerly of the Heard Natural Science Museum.
Learn about native and adapted plants from one of the leading experts in the area. Students will be introduced to great native shrubs, groundcovers, perennials and trees which are drought tolerant and thrive in our North Texas climate.
3:30 - 4:45 p.m. Urban Pollinator Habitats - Susan and Brandon Pollard: Owners of Texas Honeybee Guild and ZipCode Honey, Bee and pollinator educators
The area's leading bee-keeping experts teach the best practices for bringing food producing pollinators into your backyard. Pollinators are not only fascinating, they are crucial for food production in the urban landscape.

Make the best of what your homestead has to offer and discover new ways to improve your urban ecosystem using Permaculture Design principles. Also, find out how rainwater harvesting may be the primary method people use to meet their future water demands. Understand how rainwater systems work and why they make sense.

Learn to make your own soil amendments using red wiggler composting worms that turn your fruit and vegetable scraps into garden black gold.

Class #2: Take a Bite of This!
Know and encourage healthy food choices as a family. Learn and identify good, better and best food choices and encourage young families to grow healthy together. Your kids can learn to love vegetables, and you can stop the short order cooking. You'll all be healthier for it!
